Irritants: The first months are troubled by narrow nasal passages & exposure to dust, fragrences, smoke & other irritants.Baby tries to flush these out of the nose with mucous but this often ends as congestion & produces rattling with breathing. The best rx is washing out the nose with saline & suctioning the remainder. Eliminate irritants from babies environment & this will happen less.

Nasal saline/mist: Continue to nurse or feed as usual. The temperature should be monitored and if the temperature is elevated, then treat with medication such as Tylenol for infants. For a normal temperature, there is no need to treat. Teething rings and local teething anesthetic may be applied to control teething pain. Nasal saline and gentle suction helps to reduce nasal congestion.
