It depends on the : Nature and degree of neurologic findings as most disc herniations are treated non operatively with 10% going to surgery with 1% being a true surgical emergency when involving the nerves that control bathroom functions. The risk of spinal cord compression is low as the cord usually ends by L1 level in most adults with most disc herniations occuring at l4-5 & l5-s1.
