Up to a lifetime: Details matter. For example, a person who catches it at birth may not have any symptoms until late in adulthood. Alternatively, a person who catches it in adulthood but has a very severe case can die in weeks or months. Every new baby is supposed to be vaccinated against Hepatitis B, so hopefully this problem is less on an issue in recent decades.
