A member asked:

Son nearly 18 and has pectus excavatum it is roughly 2cm deep by 5 cm across. has no noticeable symptoms has no trouble exercising and doesn't worry how it looks. just want to know if this should be repaired? is it life threatening?

Leave it alone : This is considered a benign condition. While it is disfiguring, your son has attained 18 years without your report of any physiologic problem. At this point it should be considered cosmetic repair, unless your son has demonstrated limits to physical activity or heart/lung changes. It should not be life threatening.
