To the covering Dr.: A doctor who has gone unavailable should have a covering doctor answer calls until he or she returns to the office. Otherwise, patients will not have a place to go to get controlled substances or other potentially abusable meds that are not (or should not be) prescribed nor refilled without an in-person exam. An urgent care or ER may or may not be able to give a temporary refill.
