Not unusual: In the pre-vaccine era as many as 70% of college age women showed evidence of prior genital HPV infection. Once acquired, strains clear the primary infection within 2 yrs or so but can remain dormant thereafter for decades.The cervical cancer associated with some strains can show up decades later.Men often acquire/pass strains but never show symptoms. It is not passed by casual contact/hands.
