Atrial fibrillation: Some people with untreated atrial fibrillation live many years while others die from blood clots embolizing from the atria to various organs or die from eventual congestive heart failure because of uncontrolled rapid ventricular rates which weaken the heart muscle. Patients with properly treated atrial fibrillation can live for many years and die from other causes but not the atrial fibrillation
