A member asked:

My daughters aunt developed guillian barre syndrome a flu shot years ago. is it likely that my daughter will develop it after a flu shot because her aunt did? she is almost year old and i want to get her vaccinated but i'm afraid

Some basics: There are family influences that can increase a risk of auto-immune diseases like GBS, rheumatoid arthritis, and many others but any such effect is small. The same individual would be more likely to get GBS from the flu itself or a variety of other infections than the dead material in the flu shot. Last season had one of the most kids lost to flu complications. That risk is known & real.
