A member asked:

I have been on low dose birth control for 4 months. i started my fourth pack of birth control and still having occasional spotting. do i need to switch pills or should i wait longer? im over 35 so not sure if higher dose pull would be ideal

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Spotting on bcp's: Any low dose bcp requires being punctual on a daily basis (within an hour of talking preceding day's active pill), or "breakthrough bleeding" may occur (same reason one has a "period" after stopping the active pills). Stop the current pack, wait five days, and start a new pack and stay on time. If spotting continues, ask your gyn for a different type of low dose bcp's.
