Usually none: A healthy normal new baby breastfeeds, and usually doesn't need any other fluids. (If a newborn seems low in blood sugar or extremely hungry while in the hospital, the nurses might feed some sugar water or some formula temporarily, when the breast milk hasn't started production yet.) If a baby seems to be thirsty, Mom should offer breast milk (or formula, when there's a breast milk problem).

Nursing: Nursing is the preferred method of feeding at this age. If you are having difficulty a lactation specialist is suggested. Pumping and storing the breast milk is another option. Newborns develop a pattern of feeding but initially they feed on demand every 2-3 hours. Feed at an angle, avoid overfeeding, burp mid feed and after the feed.
