October flu shots: In the US and Canada, the best time to get a flu shot each fall is in October, which means getting one's flu shot anytime September through November is ok. However, if one misses his shot at those times, it is still fine to get it anytime until the end of the flu season. The flu season ends at the end of winter (February-March).

When available: Flu circulates around the world continuously. It tends to have seasons in various regions but international air travel means there is some risk year round. When the vaccine for the new season is available there is no benefit to waiting. It does not loose strength after many months, there are just so many strains around that no modern vaccine will protect from them all. It is the best we have.
