Hi: Proinsulin hormone produces insuline and C peptide almost in the same amount. The C peptide is used instead of insulin to value pancreatic B cells function which are responsible for insulin secretion. In the presence of hypoglycemia it is normal to produce an inhibition of endogenous insulin secretion, if the measure coincides with hypoglycemia it has no value as a B cell function test.
