One: Shingles is due to the herpes zoster virus, the virus that causes chickenpox. Once a person has chickenpox, the virus stays with that person, and can re-activate later in life as shingles. The shingles can affect different parts of the body, and may be known by different names, such as herpes zoster ophthalmicus, which affects the eye.
