Carbohydrates: Blood type is determined by testing for different types of carbohydrates on the surface of red blood cells. Abo are the most commonly known but there are many types of blood group antigens. The significance of testing is to make sure of giving a compatible transfusion. People who have type a blood naturally make type b antibodies. These antibodies would cause a hemolytic reaction to typeb blood.
