A member asked:

If my partner is switching from the mini pill to the combo pill the next day after the dose of the mini pill does a back up method need to be used? if so, how long? she has been taking the mini pill for over 2 months.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

"Mini pill" ?'s: The "mini pill" is almost as protective as the combination pill, and there is no need to use a "back up method" to prevent pregnancy if taking the combination pill's first active pill the next day. Make sure your partner knows to be punctual (within the same hour each day) as the dose of estrogen/progestin is so low, breakthrough bleeding may occur unless she is punctual.
