One way to know: The only way to know is have a quick test run in the office. It takes about 5 min and is reasonably accurate in separating the common viral sore throats from true strep. Some of the most angry nasty throats will come with things like mono & these can have strep at the same time. Strep seldom causes any gut issues other than pain.
