Labrynthitis: Vertigo is typically caused by an abnormality in the vestibular organ. Typically it involves the semicircular canals. Conditions that effect the fluid viscosity of canal (infection, thyroid disease, diuretc) can make the gland too sensitive and you get dizzy. Another common problem is an otolith to break off and this will cause dizziness.
