Genital herpes: Between visible outbreaks, herpes simplex virus (HSV) resided in spinal nerve ganglia (nodes of nerve cells near the spine) and in the skin or mucous membranes (linings) of the genital tract or mouth. It is not known to "live" in semen. However, semen could transmit HSV if there is an active outbreak. Genital herpes is mostly transmitted when there are no symptoms, i.e. no obvious outbreak.
