Pain medicine: If a person has a scratchy throat with pain, oral drugs (like acetaminophen or ibuprofen) or sprays/lozenges like chloraseptic or cepacol may be used for relief. If allergies are causing the scratchy throat, antihistamines like loratadine or cetirizine can be used. However, if symptoms get much worse or last longer than a week, then it’s a good idea for a person to get in touch with her doctor.
