It's Complicated: Social phobia involves excessive anxiety & avoidance due to a fear of embarrassment or humiliation in a wide variety of social situations. The condition is the 2nd most common behavioral disorder, and affects 13% of americans at some point in their lives. Social anxiety can increase the risk of developing clinical depression and, once depression sets in, it tends to worsen social anxiety.
