Opiate: Long term opiate or opioid medications can cause constipation mostly. Counter this with adequate fluid intake, good fiber intake and stool softeners but avoid laxatives. If passage of stool is difficult, insert a glycerin rectal suppository. Regular exercise, if practical,also helps. There are prescription medications if these measures aren't effective.

Agree with Dr. C: Increase your intake of fiber and water. You may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil and drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. For the long term you may try to increase your intake of fiber foods.
