Yes indeed: Diphenhydramine (Benadryl®) can be an effective sleep aid, but is long acting and often has exactly these effects. Aas you probably know, all sleep aids are discouraged unless really needed. Avoid alcohol near bedtime (causes rebound awakening in the middle of night or early morning hours). If sleep aid needed, a shorter acting one by prescription is recommended (e.g zolpidem, i.e. Ambien®).

Yes: As an addiction Medicine specialist I avoid any meds that cause sedation especially ones like ambien that hit the benzodiazepines receptors . Although it states it’s a non benzodiazepine, go figure. I prefer trazadone or remeron or low dose say 25 mg benedryl
