Lactation ?: Prolactin is prevented by an inhibitory factor from the pituitary. This is normal after pregnancy, but persistence or a "new" onset may be caused by pituitary tumors, which compress the pituitary gland, and stop the inhibition of prolactin, causing it to affect the breast production. Most pituitary tumors which may need surgery are associated with prolactin levels above 100.
