It depends: This depends on the hospital, but most psychiatric units have treatment teams taking care of you. These include psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists, internists, etc. There are scheduled group therapies, plus your individual sessions w/doctors. Medications may be prescribed as needed. It's a place for thorough evaluation, & for helpful treatment to start.

Agree w Dr. Pappas.: A major focus during psychiatric treatment is safety. That means keeping you safe from your self (suicidality, risk taking or self- mutilation). Keeping others safe from you if aggressive. Helping to return to reality if psychotic. Helping to restore function if so impaired that you can't sleep, eat or take care of hygiene. It can be like getting a jump start, so that you can work more.
