Since there are several causes of thick blood and a hematologist is best qualified to perform the appropriate workup.

Thick blood : Thick blood is not a medical diagnosis. If you have symptoms, you should describe those and your doctor can tailor the tests to address your symptoms. In addition to high red cell count, i.e., polycythemia; Waldenstrom macroblobulinemia, multiple myeloma, and dehydration can increased the viscosity of blood that may colloquially be called thick blood.
