24 week infant ?: Most infants born at 24 weeks have lungs which are not mature enough to provide adequate oxygen (hyaline membrane disease). Your infant will be assisted with respiratory devices and eventually steroids to decrease the problems of pre-maturity. This may require a long time in the NICU, but with concentrated efforts, the lungs will gradually improve.
