When they ask for it: Breast milk or formula are balanced nutrition that provides the proper balance of fluids to nutrients for infants. Water supplements are not necessary. It can be offered, but excess water just means more wet diapers. I find letting grandma or friends offer an ounce or two occasionally lets them participate in infant nurturing, which is socially a good idea. But it is not necessary.

No: You newborn will get all they need from breast milk or formula.Do not dilute it with more water called for on the label.Too much water to a new born can cause water intoxication causing serious condition diluting sodium in the body upsetting the .electrolyte balance even causing seizures. It is best not to give water before 6 months and may not be needed then.

Not generally needeT: Your newborn/infant generally doesn't need supplemental water. However, if your pediatrician recommends it in some situations, don't be afraid to give it. Sometimes if a baby is constipated, your pediatrician might have you give a little extra water between feeds. This may also be recommended on a very hot day.
