Herpes type I ?: Herpes types I and II are usually self limited ulcers which are painful but do not generally cause "horrible back pain". Shingles, however, which comes from Herpes Simplex (latent "chicken pox") can cause very painful skin lesions and lower back pain. See your physician for testing to be certain.
