Depends on levels: Always, diet, exercise and fruit/grain fibers. Avoid all fried , greasy and fatty foods. Get a fasting lipid profile: You want to see see totoal cholesterol less than 200, LDL- less than 150, and HDL greater than 45 . The ratio of TC to HDL: 35-65-men and 35-80-women. If your total cholesterol is high, you have twice the risk for heart disease as a person with normal total cholesterol.

Low risk of heart dz: 200mg/dl is not a desirable total cholesterol but rather highest that is "acceptable". In fact, lower is better so your 140mg/dl is actually quite impressive. However, we tend to focus on LDL (bad) & HDL (good) cholesterol. You want less of lousy stuff and higher amounts of healthy. Lower LDL & higher HDL is associated w/lower risk of heart disease. Purposefully lowering LDL shown to be good for u.

Lipids: Mediterranean diet and exercise at least half an hour a day, don't smoke; if it doesn't get to target, your doctor may want to start a statin drug.
