Depends: Rabies virus survival outside the host would depend on time duration involved, moisture & other environmental factors. Transmission to you would also require it enter a favorable entrance to your body. If virus was initially present & the dogs saliva dried out, the virus would die. If still moist, it might survive a few hours.

Not if in the US: Vaccines are the best way to prevent rabies in the US. Dogs, cats, and other pet mammals should all be vaccinated. Animal control is important. There should be no dogs on the loose anywhere in the US. Worldwide, about 55,000 people die of rabies each year, almost all of them due to dog bites. Rabies is preventable if an exposed person properly gets her wound washed and gets her shots in time.
