A member asked:

What's the difference between rales when inhaling and rales when exhaling?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Rales: I don't think there is any diagnostic significance but in my experience "dry rales" such as those heard in fibrosis are heard in both inspiration and expiration while wet rales as seen in pulmonary edema can be heard in inspiration and expiration or mainly inspiration alone. Hypostatic rales from atelectatic areas of the lung bases clear with deep breath or coughing(expansion).
