Maybe/not: Many GP's are trained in usual female issues so a visit to a Gyn may be unnecessary. In the US, a visit for a pelvic exam, regardless of who does it, is suggested within 2-3 yrs of initial sexual activity or age 21. If you have specific concerns about reproduction or genetic issues your GP may be able to help or refer you to someone with the skill set needed to answer your questions.
