Color: Fungal nails usually have uneven abnormal colors, a bruised nail from dancing will have dark dried blood under it.

Lab test.: Your podiatrist can take a sample and send it to a lab for identification. They'll be able to tell you whether there is a fungus present or whether the nail is just traumatized.
