A member asked:

My baby is 11 days old and his navel looks a bit raw and red?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not uncommon: The umbilical stump is composed of arteries & a vein that fed baby during pregnancy. As the cord stump dries & separates,it may look raw/bleed.Usually only enough to cover a few q-tips.Local care as you would a scratch is all that is needed unless the bleeding persists.Occasionally the pediatrician needs to cauterize a stubborn bleeder in the office.
