Strained Intercostal: The pain is likely a result of your chronic severe cough. When you cough you contract your diaphragm and your intercostal muscles to force air out of your lungs. Like any muscle, if you use it more than normal it will get sore. you most likely have strained your intercostal muscle. See a doctor and get your cough treated and the discomfort will likely resolve.
