A member asked:

My brother has elevated total bilirubin of 5.8 in his latest physical exam. his direct bilirubin is 0.67. he has had yellowish eyes for a few years but dark yellow urine but we always attributed it to him drinking very little water ?

Dr. John Chiu answered

Gilbert's syndrome: Although this may be associated with yellowing of the eyes, it is considered a benign genetic condition in which the liver fails to process bilirubin well.. The dark yellow urine is more reflective of dehydration or vitamin intake.
