A member asked:

3 year old. sores in his mouth, whole mouth full (incl tongue). very irritated and crying of pain. tonsils also very swolen. no other symptoms? i'm using dactarin orally? what can this be, and what should i do?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Usually virus: This is usually a coxsackie virus that invades the oral tissues. Dactarin will not help as it is for yeast/fungus. A combination of half/half diphenhydramine (Benedryl) and milk of magnesia can be painted on sores or swished in the mouth for some relief. Concentration on fluid intake (cold better) to maintain hydration is the goal until it passes in a week or so.
