Yes, a very good one: Dehydration is a profound threat so we store extra fluid in our veins. Arteries are like pipes but veins are more like reservoirs. With this extra storage we rarely feel dehydration's effects which are exactly as you describe. Vomiting and diarrhea will deplete fluid reserves very quickly. Once we've lost the 2 liters stored in veins we've lost more from tissues and need to keep replacing for 24hr
