No period: nursing ?: Although mothers who nurse "full time" frequently do not have periods for months after delivery, if adding formula, or nursing only occasionally, ovulation can occur, and of course if pregnancy happens, you will not have a period. If pregnancy is possible, get a serum HCG test to be certain, and consult your OB provider for dependable birth control if negative.

Common but ........: This is relatively common in breastfeeding mothers. It is thought to be an adaptation that allows you to nurture the newborn for an extended period before your body faces the demands of a new pregnancy. However, it is not foolproof and you could begin to release eggs before you have menses & thus get pregnant. If it matters to you a dependable form of birth control is advised.
