Low progesterone: During the first trimester of pregnancy, a cyst on the ovary called the corpus luteum produces progesterone to support the pregnancy until the placenta takes over this role by twelve weeks. Sometimes the corpus luteum does not produce enough progesterone. In those instances, progesterone can be prescribed to try to support the pregnancy through the first trimester.
