Breakthrough : Probably a breakthrough bleeding you had for some reason such as not taking bcp at the same time of the day , etc. and this breakthrough bleeding brought left over old menstrual blood out of the uterus. The brownish color comes from being old blood left in the uterus from the previous menstruation.
