My son is complaining of a headache, slight fever and sore muscles and joints. he did however drink that sour alien spray at school yesterday.

Doubt it's the drink: Low grade fever/soreness/headache all suggest a simple viral illness. OTC energy drinks can have some side effects but fever is not one of them. I would expect some more symptoms to appear over the next day or so that make the pattern more evident.
