A member asked:

I have a painful tooth that is aching and throbbing. there is no swelling but it is extremely sore to the touch. is it in an abcess?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Probably: Most common cause of tooth pain is infection (abscess) of the tooth's pulpal tissues. Appropriate treatment is to remove all of the infected tooth material via root canal or extraction. Antibiotics may be required to limit spread of infection to other organs, but will not cure the infection. There are other causes for dental pain, however, so you must see a Dentist to begin diagnosis/treatment.
