It could.: Asthma comes in a few varieties, but it is the result of complicated genetics and exposure to lung irritants and allergens. Your kids may develop asthma even if they are never exposed to smoking, but exposure certainly increases their risk. Not to mention smoking exposure increases chidren's risk of respiratory infections and may even contribute to developing of COPD or lung cancer later in life.
