Risks of diabetes: Most of the diabetic complications correlate with high hemoglobin A1C level. If you can keep it below 6, most of it can be avoided. Depends on the cardiac risk factors & co-morbidity Cardiac complication is high in a diabetic compared to non diabetic. Work on the risk factors.

Some basics: The tissues of the human body operate best within a narrow range of blood sugar. When it varies too much in the short or long term tissues will become injured. Type 1 diabetics in the pre-insulin era died within months. Today with good management they can live well into their 70's & beyond. Everyone, DM or not develops complications with age, but with DM you can influence those with good control.
