Birth control: It is ok to start birth control now. It is a good idea to take a pregnancy test if you had unprotected sex. However, if a woman becomes pregnant and is taking a birth control pill before she realizes she is pregnant, it will not harm her or the pregnancy. Additionally, if unprotected sex was less than 5 days ago, it would be best to use emergency contraception.

Possible, but...: It is possible to initiate oral contraception at the end of an existing menstrual period within 3 days and still be effective throughout that cycle. However, if more than three days have occurred, it is possible that the ovulation process could have begun resulting in an egg being present for conception.
