A member asked:

Is it possible to please tell me the what are chronic venous insufficiency and peripheral vascular disease?

Definitions: Peripheral vascular disease is an outdated term which refers to diseases of the arteries, the blood vessels which carry blood from the heart to the organs. The updated term is peripheral arterial disease (pad). Chronic venous insufficiency is disease of the veins, the blood vessels which return blood from the organs to the heart. Consult a vascular surgeon to discuss further.

Magnitude of risk: Pad aka PVD or diseased arteries carries risk for major events, heart attack, stroke, limb loss, death. While venous insufficiency is common and benefits from treatment, it does not carry risk of life and limb. That is the biggest difference between the two. They are both involving blood conduits.
