A member asked:

I have a small closed distal fracture of my fibula. what are the chances of me staying in a boot vs. casting?

Boot it is!: Most minor distal fibular fractures will be treated with a walking boot for 4-6 weeks. A cast, however, may need to be applied if the fracture is not healing well.

Issue is positioning: not the type of support per-se. Bone fractures bleed, the clots is infiltrated by fibroblasts, the chondroblasts close the fracture with cartilage which is infiltrated with osteoblasts which covert the cartilage into bone. The key issue is maintaining good positioning to facilitate healed bone close to original shape over next 3-6 months despite use, muscles, tendons, ligaments pulling on pieces.
