Dr. can check throat: New throat symptoms can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies, irritants, or stomach acid reflux. Usually, a person sees the doctor if his throat is very sore, recurrently sore, seems to have weird symptoms, or symptoms that don't go away quickly (to check for strep throat, etc...)
