Depends on the cough: If you have an underlying medical issue like asthma and emphysema, speak to your doctor about this. If you have a cold a teaspoon of honey is as effective as many over the counter remedies. If you have fevers >102 of cough for more than 10 days, see your doctor. Finally, for muscle pain, try Ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

Make diagnosis: The question is not easy to answer. Like so many questions asked, treatment must always be directed to the cause of the disease. A cough is the result of irritation to the lining of the tracheo-bronchial tree (lower resp. Tract) and may be bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, and even reflux of acid from the stomach (gerd). Thus treatment must be directed to the cause of the problem. Consult doctor.
